Every business needs to blog regularly in order to be successful online, but most business owners don’t have the time or staff to blog on a weekly basis. SEO and Web development agencies are also expensive to work with, and I’ve heard so many horror stories of people blowing thousands of dollars on their “SEO guy” and getting zero results. If you want to grow your business online, then hiring a content writer is one of the most powerful things you can do.
How Much Should You Pay a Content Writer?
Like anything, it varies. (And it depends on who you ask!) The lowest I’ve seen is $0.02 cents per word. If you have a highly experienced writer or a subject matter expert the cost can be up to $2 per word or more.
There’s nothing wrong with hiring cheap, as long as you understand they’re likely new and still breaking into their career. Just expect to either do more work editing, and expect them to raise their rates as they get more work. If you’d like more assurance then be prepared to spend more. Here are some of the factors to consider when figuring out how to hire a content writer:
- Their portfolio
- language fluency
- how much editing/revisions are included?
- How much do they know about the subject?
- How complex is the subject? Writing about fishing is much easier than writing about how a molten salt reactor works.
- How new are they?
- How much risk are you willing to take on quality?
- Did you come to them? Or they to you? (writers with their own blog are more established and therefore charge more)
For most per word rates I look for anywhere from $0.10 to $1 per word in general.
What about Paying Hourly?
Good question! I don’t have a ton of experience with Hourly, as most writers prefer per-word rates, but hourly rates can vary anywhere from $15/hr to $200+ an hour, again depending on the writer. If you’re not happy with the results of the writer, you may want to run your articles through Grammarly for proofreading, or pay the writer hourly for any additional work on a post.
What should the writer you hired write about?
Your hired content writer should write comprehensive educational content tailored to your target audience. You want to increase the value of your business to your customers by answering their questions, educating them, and establishing yourself as the authority figure in your industry.
This blog post is a good example, because I’m educating readers on how to handle DIY SEO. The people reading this particular post are very early in the “sales funnel”. They’re probably not ready to hire our company, but they can use this post to grow their business. When they start making a little more money, they’ll remember me and want to work with me.
It will also build my reputation because my advice worked for them, so it’s proof I know what I’m doing.
There’s also content you can write for later in buyers journey. Articles like “How much does SEO cost?” “Should I use Wix or WordPress?” “How do I grow my business on LinkedIn?” Etc…
Educate your readers, and don’t be afraid to give away knowledge.

Why not hire writers on UpWork?
You most certainly can. I don’t like using freelance platforms because some of them force you to only communicate using their app. UpWork doesn’t want you to work with them off their platform because they’d lose money. Also, Freelance sites charge fees. Why pay a middle man when you don’t have to?
How to Hire a Content Writer
We’ll be using Reddit to find our content writers. I highly recommend using their mobile app, as their desktop site is so bad it’s almost intentional.
- Download the Reddit App on your phone.
- Open the app.
- Use the search bar to find one of the writing subreddits above. If you want “hireawriter” simply type “hireawriter” in the search box
4. Click the + icon at the bottom of the screen
5. Select “Text” as the type of post
6. Add flair, your title, and body of the post.
7. Make sure your post follows the rules, otherwise your post may be removed. Here’s what our post looked like:

8. Hit “post” and wait for the responses to flow in!
Then it’s just a matter of reading through the messages you get and picking a writer that fits with your budget and goals!
How often should you blog?
That depends mostly on your budget and how competitive your industry is. The more competitive your industry, the more fresh content Google will want to see. That being said, quality is more important than quantity. Your goal is to be the authority figure in your industry. To do that, your website needs to be a library for your customers to access as much or as little information about your industry as they want to read. The general recommendation is to put out a post 1x a week or so, but you can scale it up or down as needed.
